Today's stories
THE 2020 PRIMARY election wrapped yesterday, finally, for the most part. There are some races out there that are subject to change (recount/contest), but we'll leave those for the time being and hit a few that are neatly in the bag.
Incumbent members of the Texas House Dan Flynn (R-Van) and J.D. Sheffield (R-Gatesville) lost their races, keeping the streak of incumbents losing in run-offs alive. The victors, respectively, Byran Slaton and Shelby Slawson, are in the catbird seat to become Representatives of these Republican strongholds in November.
These two races were part of a last-minute round of grudge endorsements by Governor Abbott against conservatives. The other meaningful endorsement was in House District 60, where Glenn Rogers may have bested Jon Francis. Abbott went 1 for 3.
Jacey Jetton (R-Richmond) won his run-off for the seat formerly held by Rick Miller. Located in Fort Bend County, it's a seat Democrats had hoped to flip, Mark Jones believes this is less likely to happen because of Jetton's victory and Democrat Suleman Lalani's defeat in the Democrat run-off. Agree.
Wacky provocateur Robert Morrow didn't come close to winning his bid for State Board of Education.
MJ Hegar appears to have defeated state Senator Royce West to take take a crack at unseating Sen. John Cornyn.
For the second consecutive election night, the Secretary of State's office showed off its lack of technological prowess. The site was buggy and inaccurate, prompting a fair amount of ridicule from election wonks.
JOHN CORNYN's pro-Trump status, which might easily be confused for political expediency, has drawn the ire of the Lincoln Project.
If you're not familiar with the Lincoln Project, it's because they're a mostly inconsequential group of political hacks who've teamed up to be never-Trumpers in 2020.
Since the group is older, they may lay claim to being the tallest of the never-Trumpers, which now includes a PAC of former Bush 43 staffers.
GEORGE SOROS won another race in Texas last night when Soros-aligned Jose P. Garza won his Travis County District Attorney race.
COVID DEATHS in Texas remains in check as case counts continue to rise. Tarrant County, home to Colleyville, has seen zero deaths on consecutive days.
Subject to change but deserving mention, the only two days Texas has exceeded 100 deaths were due to lags in reporting.
SEN. BOB HALL testified before the legislative priorities committee at the RPT Convention yesterday on the topics of securing Texas' electric grid and ending the practice of taxpayer-funded lobbying.
ZOOM is going to be a terrible solution for the GOP convention, marking probably the only time I'll ever agree with this dude.
