Today’s Stories
ROE V. WADE was overturned shortly after Friday’s newsletter was uploaded; what a joyous occasion!
Friday’s announcement caps decades of prayer and activism (in that order).
Looking forward, there will be plenty of time to unpack the decision’s impact, but the TL;DR version: primarily good in the short-run, VERY good in the long run.
No matter how badly MSNBC wants to “wish cast,” the electoral backlash to the decision will likely be minimal. To the extent that abortion returns as a political issue, it probably helps Republicans with Hispanics in the Southwest (e.g., recent case in point) and Catholics in the Upper Midwest.
Before moving on, however, it’s worth remembering that Roe v. Wade began in Texas.
The original case involved a Texas statute.
The attorney who argued the case was rewarded with a plum assignment at the state’s flagship law school (see photo above).
While only one of the justices on the Roe court was appointed by a president from Texas, he voted with the majority.
In a lot of ways, this one’s on us.
But…all of that’s in the past. And, realistically speaking, the forces in Texas that gave us Roe have been in retreat for 25 years.
So, enjoy this one. A lot of work remains, but this is a monumental accomplishment.

JOHN CORNYN, meanwhile, appreciates attention shifting from his worst issue (guns) to his best (judges). If the SCOTUS justices Cornyn worked to confirm ultimately toss last week’s gun vote, it would be a supreme (pun intended) irony.
