Today’s Stories
ABORTION is unlikely to rescue Democrats politically, and if they try a “Hail Mary” on the issue, it’s likely to accelerate their death spiral.
No matter how they try to convince themselves otherwise, abortion isn’t popular. Certainly not the “Roe standard.” Furthermore, preserving the Roe standard isn’t even close to a priority for voters.
Democrats pursue this strategy at their peril. To the extent that they attempt it, they position themselves further outside the mainstream.
And they’re already far outside the mainstream. But can they stop themselves?
Democrats have this strange habit of using selectively worded polling to convince themselves their agenda is popular when it isn’t. It’s similar to gaslighting, but when you do it to yourself.
Politico reports that Democrat U.S. Senate incumbents in Colorado and Washington are preparing offensives on the subject. They may or may not work, but they mainly highlight the depth of Democrats’ hole.
If Colorado’s competitive, we’re in the neighborhood of “GOP +5” in the U.S. Senate. If Washington’s competitive, we’re talking “GOP +6.”
(Aside: The conventional wisdom on U.S. Senate races isn’t nearly bullish enough for the GOP.)
Closer to home, it all feels Pro-forma. Sure, Bobby Francis O’Rourke held an event. Sure, there were a couple of marches. But it mostly feels like people are going through the motions.
POST-UVALDE CRISIS EXPLOITATION moves forward as Patrick and Phelan agree to support each other’s boondoggles.
MAYRA FLORES, a new Republican congresswoman from South Texas, got into a dustup with Nancy Pelosi when the speaker tried to push Flores’ daughter to the side during her swearing-in ceremony.
Pelosi’s treatment of Flores’ daughter is an excellent metaphor for why Democrats are losing South Texas.
